Inside the Tribe with Tonyell: What Happens After You Say Yes?

Greetings Tribe 💛✨  

Last week, we opened an invitation.

This week...

we have to go somewhere.

And I think there's something wonderfully inconvenient about that.

It's easy to romanticise the moment we say yes.

Yes to the trip.Yes to the opportunity.Yes to the invitation.Yes to trying something we've never done before.

We imagine the destination.

We picture who we'll meet.

We start thinking about everything that might be waiting on the other side.

But eventually...

we actually have to leave.

And sometimes that's when the real journey begins.

After The Invintation

Last week, Maya spent a lot of time trying to understand why she couldn't ignore the invitation she'd received.

If you've been reading When the Village Carries Home, you already know that this wasn't simply another request for the Global Village to visit another community.

There was something more personal waiting inside it.

This week, Maya stops thinking about the journey...

and begins taking it.

Chapter Two is called The Crossing.

And I love that title because crossings aren't always about distance.

Sometimes they're about the space between who we were...

and who we're becoming.

Between the places we've left...

and the things those places quietly taught us before we went.

Between saying,

"I'll go."

and actually arriving.

What Do We Carry With Us?

I think we all carry pieces of home without realising it.

The way we welcome people.

The foods we prepare when someone visits.

The music we play when we're happy.

The expressions we use without remembering where we learned them.

The way we celebrate.

The way we grieve.

The way we make room at the table.

We carry those things into friendships.

Into workplaces.

Into relationships.

And yes...

into the places we travel.

That's part of what makes discovering another culture so beautiful.

We don't arrive empty-handed.

But neither do the people waiting for us.

And I think that's where this week's story becomes interesting.

Because what happens when everything one community has learned about belonging meets another community with its own history...

its own memories...

its own way of doing things?

When One Village Meets Another

The Global Village has learned a lot over the years.

We've learned that people need somewhere they can arrive without having to explain every part of themselves.

We've learned that food can start conversations.

That music can cross boundaries before words ever do.

That sometimes the simplest invitation... 

“Come and sit with us.”

...can change someone's entire experience of a room..

But experience can become dangerous when it convinces us we already know the answer.

What worked in one community won't automatically work in another.

What feels welcoming to us may not feel welcoming to someone else.

And something we see as an empty space...

might actually be a space someone else is still deciding how to fill.

That's the challenge waiting underneath Chapter Two.

The Global Village knows how its Village grew.

Now it has to learn what happens when it encounters someone else's.

Maya Sees Colour Differntly

I think Maya is the perfect person to take us across that threshold.

Artists spend their lives noticing differences.

A shade of blue isn't simply blue.

Light changes depending on where it falls.

Two colours can sit beautifully beside one another without either one needing to become the other.

And an unfinished canvas isn't necessarily empty.

Sometimes...

it's still becoming.

That's the Maya I want you to travel with this week.

Not Maya the Artistic Director.

Not Maya the person with decades of experience.

Maya the observer.

The woman looking through the window and noticing what has changed.

What remains familiar.

What belongs to memory.

And what has continued becoming without her.

Because perhaps that's one of the first lessons of crossing into another place.

You don't arrive to choose its colours.

You arrive curious enough to discover the colours already there.

That same idea will travel with us throughout the Global Village this week.

Tomorrow, our Featured Tour of the Season takes us to London, where generations of people have brought languages, traditions, memories and pieces of home into the same city without creating just one version of what London must be.

Later in the week, we'll continue exploring what happens when communities meet, listen and begin learning from one another.

And we're also preparing for this month's Friendly Fridays: Open Mic Night.

I think there's something beautifully appropriate about an Open Mic happening while we're exploring this particular chapter.

Because an open microphone isn't about giving everyone the same thing to say.

It's about creating enough space for different voices to be heard.

If you read Chapter One last week, Maya has already made her decision.

Now it's time to travel with her.

Chapter Two asks a deceptively simple question:

What happens when the Global Village meets another village?

I don't think the answer is going to be as simple as anyone expects.

Because perhaps travelling well isn't only about discovering somewhere new.

Perhaps it's also about discovering which parts of home we should carry with us...

and which assumptions we need to leave at the door.
