I'm Kai, Community Director here in the Global Village.

People often think Carnival begins with a parade.

With costumes.With music.With dancers filling the streets.

But that's never where it starts.

Carnival begins with an invitation.

Someone asks a neighbour to come along.A friend brings a friend.A family makes room for one more person at the table.

Long before the first drum is played...

Someone chooses to welcome somebody in.

That's how traditions stay alive.

Carnival Belongs to Everyone

Chapter Four of When the Village Dances asks a simple but powerful question:

Who carries culture forward?

For me, the answer has always been ordinary people.

Not the performers.

Not the organisers.

Not the people standing on the stage.

The people laughing together.The people sharing food.The people learning a new dance.The people introducing someone who has never been before.

Every person who chooses to show up becomes part of the tradition.

That's how culture survives.

Not because we watch it...

Because we participate in it.

Every Guests Helps Keep the Story Going

One of my favourite things about Friendly Fridays is watching the room come alive.

At first, people arrive in small groups.

Some know each other.

Some don't know anyone at all.

Then conversations begin.

Tables become shared.

Music gets louder.

People who were strangers an hour ago are dancing together like old friends.

Nobody plans it.

It simply happens because people choose to welcome one another.

That's what community looks like.
