Who Makes You Feel Safe Enough to Be Yourself?

Greetings Tribe 💛✨
There are people we remember because they gave us advice.
There are people we remember because they inspired us.
And then there are the people we remember because they simply listened.
Not to reply.
Not to fix us.
Not to change us.
Just to understand.
This week, as our Chapter 3 journey continues exploring Freedom as Expression, I've been thinking about something we don't celebrate often enough.
The people who make us feel safe enough to be ourselves.
Because sometimes...
Freedom doesn't begin when we find our voice.
It begins when someone is willing to listen.
Every Story Deserves Space
Inside the Tribal Lounge, conversations often begin with simple questions.
"Where are you from?"
"Have you travelled with us before?"
"What brought you here today?"
The answers are never just answers.
Behind each one is a lifetime of experiences.
A family.
A memory.
A dream.
Sometimes even a struggle.
When people know they won't be judged for their story...
They're far more willing to share it.
That's something I've come to treasure about our community.
We don't expect everyone to arrive with confidence.
We simply make room for everyone to arrive.
Freedom Needs Safe Places
This month we've been exploring Freedom as Expression.
We often think expression begins with speaking.
But I believe it begins much earlier than that.
It begins when people feel safe.
Safe enough to laugh.
Safe enough to ask questions.
Safe enough to admit they don't have all the answers.
Safe enough to tell their story.
That's the kind of freedom every community should offer.
Not the freedom to be the loudest person in the room...
But the freedom to be your authentic self.
Listening Builds the Village
People sometimes imagine communities are built by programmes.
Or events.
Or busy calendars.
Those things help bring people together.
But relationships are built in quieter moments.
One conversation over coffee.
One shared story before a journey.
One familiar face remembering your name.
One person choosing to listen instead of looking at their phone.
That's how trust grows.
Not all at once.
But one conversation at a time.
The People Who Listened
Think back for a moment.
Who was the first person who truly listened to you?
Perhaps it was a parent.
A teacher.
A grandparent.
A friend.
Or maybe someone you only knew for a short time.
Whoever they were...
There's a good chance they changed far more than a single conversation.
They reminded you that your thoughts mattered.
That your voice mattered.
That you mattered.
Sometimes we never realise how powerful that gift is until someone offers it to us.
A Note from Tonya
One of my favourite moments isn't when a room becomes louder.
It's when someone who's been quietly observing finally joins the conversation.
You can almost see the moment they realise they're safe.
Someone asks another question.
Someone smiles.
Someone genuinely listens.
And suddenly...
A stranger becomes part of the group.
Those moments remind me that belonging isn't something we create through grand gestures.
It's created every time we choose curiosity over assumptions...
And listening over speaking.
If we want the Global Village to become the community we imagine...
Perhaps the greatest gift we can offer one another isn't advice.
It's our attention.

🤝🏾 Continue the Conversation
Who made you feel safe enough to be yourself?
And how might you become that person for someone else this week?
Because every conversation...
Every welcome...
Every moment of genuine listening...
Helps another part of the Global Village find its place.
